What is generative AI?

Past the hype and past the doom, here is the honest version. It takes about five minutes, and you do not need to know anything to start.

Generative AI is the technology behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Strip away the noise and it is simple to describe: it is software that has read an enormous amount of writing, and learned to produce a sensible next piece when you ask it for something. You type what you want in plain English, and it writes back a draft.

That is the real shift. For the first time, you can tell a computer what you want in ordinary words instead of code, and it will have a good go at making it. That is the whole reason a site like this can exist, and why someone with no technical background can now build real things.

Two loud opinions, both wrong

Most of what you hear about AI comes from one of two camps. One says it is about to take over the world and make us all redundant. The other says it is a useless bubble that will pop any minute. Both are louder than they are right.

The boring truth sits in the middle. These tools are genuinely useful and already changing how a lot of work gets done. They are also limited, often wrong, and nowhere near as magic as the headlines suggest. You do not need a position on the future of humanity. You just need to know what they can do for you this week.

What it is actually good at

Think of it as a fast, tireless assistant that is brilliant at first drafts and terrible at being trusted blindly. It is genuinely good at:

Where it falls down

It is also confidently wrong more often than people expect. It can invent a fact, a number, or a quote and present it with total confidence. It does not truly know what is true, and it has gaps around very recent events. None of this makes it useless. It just means you stay in charge: you bring the judgement, it brings the speed.

The five-second version

  • 1It is software that turns plain-English requests into useful drafts.
  • 2It is neither the apocalypse nor a fad. It is a tool.
  • 3Great at drafts, summaries, your own data, and doing the technical part for you.
  • 4Confidently wrong sometimes, so you always check its work.
  • 5You bring the judgement, it brings the speed.
The one habit that matters

Never paste an AI answer straight into anything important without reading it. Treat every output as a confident first draft from a clever intern, not a final answer. That single habit keeps you safe through everything that follows.

Why now

People have tried these tools for years and bounced off. What changed recently is that they got good enough, and easy enough, for a non-coder to build real, working things instead of just chatting. That is the whole reason for this course. The fastest way to understand any of this is to use it, so the next stages get you doing exactly that.

Next up: a quick tour of the main tools, so you know which one to reach for without trying all of them.
